My involvement in CI&I and SI&I started when I worked with commercial, communal and emerging farmers in the beef sector, and then dairy, small stock and poultry, in South Africa to achieve improvements in profit. Part of my role included leadership, support, tracking and analysing the economic impact the farmers were achieving from using the CI&I process. I was also building the skills of farmers and support staff to use the CI&I process and tools into the future.
After a long career in research and government, I now work at the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network where I manage the monitoring and evaluation of projects funded by donors such as Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, USAID, UKAID and ACIAR. I also design Logical Frameworks, Results Management Frameworks and Plans, and Impact Pathways for proposed projects. I supervise postgraduate students and examine dissertations with centres at the Universities of Johannesburg (Public Governance), Free State (Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Rural Development and Extension) and Venda (Institute for Rural Development). My work has given me opportunities to create partnerships and alliances in the private, public, government, non-government and international development sectors. I have also been able to develop a strong appreciation of business and socio-economic environments in Eastern, Central, Western and South African regions and Australia. I have seen firsthand the benefits CI&I and SI&I can have in businesses, projects, communities and industries. I have also experienced the impact they can have in improving the performance of government organisations. I am confident CI&I and SI&I can deliver outcomes in many contexts and places.
