The SI&I
Team and Network
Pam is the Coordinator of the Sustainable Improvement and Innovation Network and manages this website. Pam uses and promotes the Sustainable Improvement and Innovation system in her work in leadership development at University of Queensland, in promoting continuous innovation and improvement in the Queensland Government and in leadership development for rural and regional communities.
"The SI&I approach will be useful for anyone who wants to develop a profound understanding of the systems they work in, and to grow their knowledge, wisdom and ability to create worthwhile change."
Pam brings her knowledge in the development of leadership to the team's skillset, with particular emphasis on designing engaging and effective learning programs - face-to-face and also using technologies for remote learning and collaboration.
Pam developed the online Business Innovation and Improvement in Government (BIIG) Toolkit now being used by Queensland and Victorian State Governments, the Australian Taxation Office and the Australian Public Service Commission, along with several Universities in Australia and Europe.
Pam offers SI&I, leadership and a wide-range of other effectiveness learning programs. She coaches and facilitates to grow people’s ability to lead themselves and others to achieve their potential and the things that really matter to them. Her focus is on contributing to a more equitable, just and sustainable world.

I am passionate about achieving improvements and innovations and supporting others to also do this. I wasn’t always skilled in this field, and originally wasn’t aware of the steps and tools necessary to make improvement and innovation happen. But I have explored, researched and developed ways of achieving both personal and professional outcomes, improvements and innovations. This work has been done in partnership with a wide range of people in different teams, networks, projects, businesses, organisations, regions and communities. Working with these partners has been a source of great enjoyment. Together we have published evidence of the many successes, improvements and innovations we have achieved.
It has been very stimulating working with people who are interested in the Head-Heart-Hand – that combination of thinking, feeling and action that is essential for greater successes, improvements and innovations. I enjoy thinking and taking action towards my SMARTT goals every 1, 10, 30, 90 and 360 days. I have been strongly influenced by Stephen Covey and his idea of starting with the end in mind.
Much of my personal and professional life is built around my knowledge and skills in the SI&I system and CI&I process, and the mechanisms to support their use at the practice, process and system levels.
The SI&I website is designed to support those interested in using the right mechanisms to achieve greater successes, improvements and innovations. I look forward to offering my support to help make this happen.

I get a buzz out of achieving improvements and innovations,
and from supporting others to achieve them too.
While improvement and innovation isn’t always easy, I find achieving my
own improvement goals and supporting others to achieve their goals, very
satisfying. I like sharing my passion
and enthusiasm for SI&I and CI&I with others.
I have been using SI&I and CI&I for more than 15 years. One of the things I have really enjoyed has been the opportunity to work in partnership with hundreds of people who aspire to achieve greater impact in their teams, projects, businesses, organisations, regions, industries and communities through improvement and innovation. Together we have achieved remarkable things.
One of my roles in the SI&I network is to design capacity building programs and resources. It is very rewarding to see people’s knowledge and skills develop over time. But for me, the important thing in the SI&I and CI&I approach to capacity building is that people achieve outcomes in the real world as they build their capacity.
I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm and experiences through this website, and to building new partnerships with people who are committed to improvement and innovation.

Dr Nkhanedzeni Nengovhela
(Known by his friends as Nkhane or 'Baldwin')
I have been involved in SI&I and CI&I since the early 2000’s, applying the system and process to achieve results in partnership with people in agricultural businesses, communities and governments in southern Africa, and in my own roles.
In my work with the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa I have supported commercial, communal and emerging farmers and extension officers in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana through capacity building in the CI&I approach.
In my broader work context, I use skills in teaching, coaching, writing, strategizing, designing interventions and research and development to achieve priority outcomes in agriculture and rural contexts. I am an accredited animal science teacher at university level, and an accredited facilitator, assessor and moderator with two education and training authorities in South Africa.
My family has been involved in agribusiness for many generations. We operate an irrigation scheme that produces small grains, cash crops, dry crops, small stock and cattle. We have also been farming broiler chickens since 1980.
I enjoy the challenge of coordinating multidisciplinary, multicultural and international teams to develop comprehensive concepts and projects that achieve improvements and innovations in real world settings. I am interested in thinking afresh about approaches that are relevant to agricultural enterprises that are facing resource limitations. I have a special interest in developing and studying new trends in conventional rural settings as well as in peri-urban and urban situations.

My involvement in CI&I and SI&I started when I worked with commercial, communal and emerging farmers in the beef sector, and then dairy, small stock and poultry, in South Africa to achieve improvements in profit. Part of my role included leadership, support, tracking and analysing the economic impact the farmers were achieving from using the CI&I process. I was also building the skills of farmers and support staff to use the CI&I process and tools into the future.
After a long career in research and government, I now work at the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network where I manage the monitoring and evaluation of projects funded by donors such as Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, USAID, UKAID and ACIAR. I also design Logical Frameworks, Results Management Frameworks and Plans, and Impact Pathways for proposed projects.
I supervise postgraduate students and examine dissertations with centres at the Universities of Johannesburg (Public Governance), Free State (Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Rural Development and Extension) and Venda (Institute for Rural Development).
My work has given me opportunities to create partnerships and alliances in the private, public, government, non-government and international development sectors. I have also been able to develop a strong appreciation of business and socio-economic environments in Eastern, Central, Western and South African regions and Australia.
I have seen firsthand the benefits CI&I and SI&I can have in businesses, projects, communities and industries. I have also experienced the impact they can have in improving the performance of government organisations. I am confident CI&I and SI&I can deliver outcomes in many contexts and places.
